December 3: Communicating about extremism and terrorism to non-academic audiences – messaging, engagement and researcher safety. Dr Olivia Brown

  • by

Public interest in understanding extremism and terrorism has only increased with the evolution of technology and pervading hateful discourse online. This presents new opportunities to communicate findings and engage in broader conversations about your research and its impact upon society and public safety. In this session, expect to learn about the process of engaging with the media and a range of stakeholders, including in educational settings, healthcare, charities and with law enforcement. We will discuss the different avenues for disseminating research, and Dr Olivia Brown will share some top tips for preparing for media engagement and how to protect yourself online.

About the speaker:

Olivia Brown is an Associate Professor in Digital Futures at the University of Bath, School of Management. Liv’s research sits at the intersection of psychology and behavioural science, aiming to understand how intra- and inter-group processes influence individual and group behaviour in online and offline settings. For instance, Liv studies high-reliability organisations to understand what factors support teamwork in extreme and challenging settings and has conducted extensive research examining how online communications data might be used to predict and understand behaviour offline.  She is especially interested in how online interactions can influence offline behaviour, with a focus on extremism and terrorism.

Liv is Deputy Director for the Bath Institute of Digital Security and Behaviour, part of the research stream for the Centre for Research and Evidence on Security Threats (CREST) and a member of the Bath BeaconThe Value of Data, considering how the cultural, economic, and psychological value of digital traces can deliver positive societal impacts.
