Patrick Finnegan is an Associate Lecturer in Strategic Studies with the School of International Relations, a position he has held since January 2020. He holds an MA in Military History and Strategic Studies from Maynooth University, and a PhD in Security, Conflict and Justice from the University of Exeter.

Patrick’s first academic monograph ‘Professionalism and the Provos’ is under preparation for publication with a University press. This piece examines the relationship between military sociology and terrorism studies to highlight how changes in organisational cohesion/effectiveness had significant impacts on the Northern Ireland Troubles and shows how the work on state militaries can help us understand non-state militaries.

Patrick teaches mainly in the area of strategic studies and conflict studies. He has previously worked on the British Army’s Higher Education Pathway as a content creator and assessor.
