Simon is a PhD student in the School of International Relations. He is interested in foreign fighters and more specifically in foreign terrorist fighters. His research looks at foreign terrorist fighters from two different perspectives: the global politics perspective of how the international community has responded and still responds to foreign terrorist fighters with a specific focus on the role of the United Nations (UN) and the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) as well as from the international law perspective with a focus on how foreign terrorist fighters can be held accountable for their actions.

Simon holds a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations, Economics and Law from the University of Erfurt in Germany; a Master of Letters in Terrorism and Political Violence from the University of St Andrews in the UK; as well as a LLM in Public International Law from the Universiteit Leiden in the Netherlands.
