Counterterrorism in remote and rural spaces. Dr Nick Brooke

  • by

Security and Space: In Pursuit of Interconnections, edited by Faye Donnelly and Tilman Schwarze and published by Bristol University Press in 2026, brings fresh insights into how social spaces shape the way we experience and understand security, with chapters uniting voices from critical security studies, urban geography, criminology, and political science to rethink the link between security and space, from neighbourhood crime to global conflict. Among the contributors is our colleague Dr Nick Brooke, Lecturer in Terrorism and Political Violence at CSTPV, whose chapter examines counterterrorism in remote and rural spaces. The chapter offers a welcome corrective to the field’s longstanding preoccupation with urban environments, and one that speaks directly to questions of how geography conditions both the threat landscape and the reach of the state’s response.
